Harghita County

Harghita is a Romanian county ( Judet ) in Transylvania, with the county town of Miercurea Ciuc. Its common abbreviation and the license plate are HR.

The district is named after the Harghita Mountains and is bordered to the north by the Suceava County, on the east by the circles Neamt and Bacau, on the south by the counties of Covasna and Braşov and to the west by the county of Mureş.

Demography

In 2002, the county 326 020 inhabitants and a population density of 49 inhabitants per km ². 84.6 percent of the population are Székely (Hungary).

2011 had the Harghita County 310 867 inhabitants thus a population density of 47 inhabitants per km ².

Geography

The county has a total area of ​​6639 km ², equivalent to 2.78 % of the area of Romania. Situated in the north eastern Transylvania, in the historical region of Csík county (county Tschick ), is the Harghita County in the Eastern Carpathians in Giurgeu Mountains. Furthermore, the north of the district in the southern part of the Călimani Mountains, the North East in the southwestern part of the Bistrita Mountains, the east in the western part of the Hasmas Mountains, the south in the northern part of the Harghita Mountains, the Southwest is in the Transylvanian basin and the West in Gurghiu Mountains.

The Harghita County is in Hasmas Mountains headwaters of the rivers Mureş ( Maros ) and the Olt (Alt ) and Gurghiu Mountains of Târnava Mica ( Small Kokel ) and the Târnava Mare (Grand Kokel ).

The largest lakes in the county are the Sfânta Ana Lake ( St. Anne's Lake, 949 m above sea level. NN ) in Ciomatu massif, the Lacu Rosu Reservoir ( Killer Lake, 983 m), the CIUCAS Lake in the spa town Tuşnad.
