Harmalol is an indole alkaloid, which is among the substance groups of β -carbolines and Harman alkaloids.

Occurrence

It is present in ayahuasca, in the stems of Passiflora incarnata and Hippophae rhamnoides, in the roots of Apocynum CANNABINUM, as well as in the seeds of steppe rue ( Peganum harmala ).

Physiological effects

Harmalol is a monoamine oxidase and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitors. It also inhibits the cancer- activating enzyme CYP1A1. It is used in DNA - or RNA - alkaloid - binding studies. Harmalol increased, the pulse amplitude maximum aortic flow and myocardial contraction in anesthetized dogs with normal blood pressure.
