Harmodio Arias Madrid

Harmodio Arias Madrid ( born July 3, 1886 in Penonomé, † 1963) was the 16th President of the Republic of Panama.

Arias was born as the son of Antonio Arias and Carmen Madrid in Penonomé and had three siblings. He studied law in Southport, England, and graduated from the University of Cambridge. As a lawyer he was then working for several years with the law firm Fábrega and Arias. After his entry into politics, he was Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Member of the Commission Codificadora and extraordinary representative of Panama in Argentina and the USA very quickly. During these years he also taught Roman and international law. He was also a member of the Academy of History in Buenos Aires and Caracas, as well as the Panamanian Society for International Law. In the years 1910 to 1912 he operated mainly as a technical writer.

On June 5, 1932, he was the successor of Ricardo Joaquín Alfaro Jovane president. of Panama and stayed the entire remainder of the term until October 1, 1936 at the office. His successor was Juan Arosemena Demóstenes Barreati.
