The Harnas Wildlife Foundation is a farm with several buildings, a fenced area and surrounding conservation area in Namibia, approximately 300 km east of the capital, Windhoek.

The same resident organization operates an animal orphanage and medical center, the abused, injured and receives caught held wild animals from Namibia. Furthermore, the disadvantaged San population actively supported.

History

1978 acquired Nick and Marieta van der Merwe an abused vervet monkey out of the hands of kidnappers for five border and some bread. This monkey was followed by other animals that found refuge on their farm. To cover the rising cost of food, new pens and medical treatment, the family had van der Merwe financed Harnas opened its doors to visitors and contributors.

There was a wildlife area that has been expanded over the years. The farm includes enclosure, a volunteer center, safari tours, guest farm and a sanctuary - Wildlife - to the main house. Once the animals fit and able the facilities are to leave, the previously injured and traumatized animals are released into the wildlife.

There are now living among other lions, cheetahs, leopards, caracals, eagles, monkeys, mongooses, zebras, baboons, African wild dogs or springbok.

The international patron of HWF have taken Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Projects

Over the years, the following projects have developed:

Harnas Lifeline Project

In a protected area of 8,000 hectares and einzäunten suitable animals that have been previously saved and raised to be reintroduced. So it is possible for them to live in their natural and original habitat without human intervention.

Harnas Wild Dog Project

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is one of the most endangered species in Africa, whose protection has become the Harnas Wildlife Foundation prescribed. Currently Harnas home to more than 30 of these animals in different herds.

Harnas volunteer project

The volunteer program was started about ten years ago and are interested animal lovers aged between 18 and 45 and from all over the world the opportunity to actively participate Harnas. This includes various areas of wildlife, research, child care and also medical projects.

Cheeky Cheetah Project

Since a large part of the staff at the animal welfare farm belonging to the San people, the Harnas Wildlife Foundation promoting this original nomadic people adopted. The Cheeky Cheetah Day Center is a child-friendly preschool that prepare the children of the San to attend a school. You learn the English language and Afrikaans, basic hygiene rules and the love of learning is to be awakened. Harnas has done to its own teacher. The children come five times a week together, get a hot meal, a shower and can be playful prepared for school. In support of the San - Family sponsorships will be awarded.

San aid

To promote the disadvantaged population the San Harnas Wildlife Foundation has not only many of the Bushmen, but also maintains a training workshop for craft occupations. The San learn here work in carpentry, electrics, installations, car repairs and farm work and have the opportunity also to other farms qualified to work.

Trivia

The Orphanage for wild animals: The First radiates since 2011 the documentary series The Orphanage for wild animals. Young volunteers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland live for two weeks on Harnas, take care of along with the employed Bushmen to the animals and make their allocated care cases before. So far, 80 episodes have been sent (Status: November 12, 2013). The ARD library holds the last 20 episodes available.
