History

The core of the library of Harvard College were 400 books in the possession of the theologian John Harvard, but it grew in the next century to the then largest library in America before they lost by a fire in 1764 almost all collections. The Harvard College then received numerous book and monetary donations for the reconstruction, said Thomas Hollis (1720-1774), who had to send thousands of selected works from England, we can highlight the. First official librarian was from 1667 to 1672 Solomon Stoddard.

Today it is the largest university library system in the world, also the third largest library in the United States after the Library of Congress and the Library Network of the Boston Public Library.

Organizational structure

The entire library management reports to the Office of the Librarian of Harvard College. On 20 December 2010 Helen Shenton has previously worked at the British Library, appointed Executive Director of the Harvard Library. Oversight body within the university administration is the Library Board.
