Hasan Hanafi criticizes Jabri negative attitude towards mystical, illuminationistischer and spiritual philosophy. Even Hanafi agrees with the thesis of a Jabri spilled Islamic identity. However, the rediscovery of the cultural heritage he would not like Jabri reach about postmodern methods, but a critique of European culture. He chooses a hermeneutic - phenomenological approach. He wants Hanafi favorited any pure return to the traditional heritage of Islam, instead examine the path to modernity. In his opinion, there is no need for the Islamic world, to find access to modernity, because modernity is already universal and all companies have participated.

However, he criticized that the existing concept of modernity has failed, as it builds up exclusively at European bases. He makes it therefore aims to analyze these basics and using the results to develop an Islamic modernity concept. His work, he referred to ironically as " Okzidentalistik " (as opposed to Oriental Studies ).

At the western-dominated modernity concept criticized Hanafi, that there are certain center cultures, such as have colonized and oppressed the Islamic the peripheral cultures. These peripheral cultures are deformed and disfigured by the Western influence. Hanafi describes that the peripheral cultures. Development by the scientific methods of the center of cultures and an analysis of past Modern development, develop a sovereign, new modern design

Such a new approach would implement the principles of equality and unity for all people according to Hanafi. For the center cultures he describes a phase of decadence and postulated for them the need for new conceptual ideas from the peripheral cultures to get.
