Hassi R'Mel gas field

Hassi R'Mel (Arabic حاسي الرمل ) is a natural gas field in the province of Laghouat in Algeria. The field is the largest in Africa and one of the largest gas fields in the world. In the center of the field is the same town Hassi R'Mel. From here, the field extends about 70 km from north to south and 50 km in east-west direction.

The deposit was discovered in 1956, studied as a French company in Algeria for oil. The development began in 1961. The size of the site was estimated to be 3000 billion cubic meters, of which about 2,400 billion commercially recoverable. About 100 billion cubic meters per year to be promoted; representing about a quarter of Algeria's annual production.

Hassi R'Mel is an important node in the pipeline network between Africa and Europe. The town is the starting point of the pipelines Maghreb - Europe (via Morocco to Spain ), Medgaz ( Spain ), Transmed (via Tunisia to Italy ) and GALSI ( via Sardinia to Italy ) and endpoint of the planned Trans - Saharan Gas Pipeline (from Nigeria).
