Province

Hat Yai (also Haad Yai, Thai: หาดใหญ่ ) is a large city ( thesaban Nakhon ) in Thailand. It is located in the southern region of Thailand, belonging to the province of Songkhla and is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Hat Yai. The name Hat Yai is the short form of Ma Hat Yai ( มะ หาดใหญ่, Artocarpus lacucha ), which translates to " Big Ma - Has - tree " is.

Geography

The city is located in the south of the country, about 55 kilometers from the border with Malaysia. With about 187 920 inhabitants ( 2000 census ) Hat Yai is the largest city of Songkhla province, but not its capital.

The town lies on the railway line that runs from Bangkok through Malaysia to Singapore. The international train station from Hat Yai is the largest in Southern Thailand. 28 trains through the airport each day, 26 trains of the SRT ( State Railway of Thailand) and two ( Ekspres Langawi ) of KTMB of Malaysia.

On the outskirts is the Hat Yai International Airport ( IATA: HDY ).

History

Until the connection to the railway network in 1922 was Hat Yai only a small place, originally called Khok Su -Met Choon.
