Hațeg

Haţeg ( German Hatzeg or Hötzing, Hungarian Hátszeg ) is a town in Hunedoara County in Romania.

Geographical location

Haţeg located in the center of the river Strei ( German Strell ) carrying valley basin, which bears the name of geomorphological Depresiunea Haţeg what (also Wallenthal, Romanian Tara Hategului ) corresponds to the historic region Hatzeger country. To the east of the town is the Sureanu, in the south the Retezat and to the west the Tarcu Mountains. The district capital Deva is about 30 km north of Haţeg away.

History

Haţeg was mentioned in a document of the Hungarian king Béla IV in 1276 for the first time. In 1366 it became the administrative center with royal court and was awarded the status of a city, starting in 1764 is Haţeg seat of a boundary, the company consisted mainly of Romanian soldiers. Until 1918 it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania and Austria- Hungary. By the end of the First World War, the city was the seat of a chair in the district county, Hungary Hunyadi. Which was predominantly inhabited by Romanians for hundreds of years - - Then the city came to Romania. The main economic activities of Haţeg are obtaining timber, beer production and the production of energy from hydropower.

Population

1850 were in the region of today's 2,578 residents registered, of which 1,194 lived in Haţeg, the remaining 1,384 in today's incorporated villages. 2,197 were Romanians, 174 Roma, 97 Hungarians and 59 German. When - however controversial - Census in 1910 the population had risen to 4,884, of which 3,176 identified themselves as Romanians, 1,509 as Hungary and 143 as German. In Haţeg even then lived 3,124 people. By 1992, a further population increase was recorded ( 11,616 ). As of the 2002 census lived in Haţeg 10,910 people, including 9,710 in the city proper, and 1,200 in the local villages. 10,468 identified themselves as Romanians, 303 as Hungary, 67 and 33 as Roma than German.

Traffic

Haţeg is located on the railway line from Subcetate after Caransebeş which is closed between Subcetate and Bautar to date ( 2009). The city thus has no railways. There are regular bus services to Petrosani and Hunedoara. Through the city leads the European Route 79

Others

Haţeg is named for the pterosaurs Hatzegopteryx whose fossil remains were found in 1978 near the city.
