Haus Ludwig

The Haus Ludwig is an art museum in Saarlouis ( Germany ).

Genesis

On 30 May 1989, the museum, which found its home in a former bank building representative, opened under the name Ludwig Museum House of Arts of the GDR; the idea for the project originated at the former Lord Mayor of the town of Saarlouis, Richard Nospers back. The exhibition area of the museum comprises approximately 400 m² on the ground floor and the 1st floor.

Initially, only works by artists of the former GDR were shown. This was a result of the first German - German twinning, which was received by an agreement of the then Prime Minister of Saarland, Oskar Lafontaine with its early state Erich Honecker between Saarlouis and ironworks city. In 1990 the Museum Ludwig Museum House was renamed for art exhibitions Saarlouis. Since then, regional, national and international artists are presented in the context of changing exhibitions. On the second floor of the building is a studio, the various groups and factions of the Saarland's art scene as a meeting place as well as various regional artists is for their exhibitions.

There is a cooperation with the Ludwig Galerie Schloss Oberhausen, which was established by the local chocolate factory of the collector Peter Ludwig and his wife Irene Ludwig.

Main focus

The Haus Ludwig defined in its exhibition activities on three areas:

  • Exhibitions of important works from the collections of the collector couple Irene and Peter Ludwig
  • Exhibitions by artists of regional art scene
  • Cooperation with national and international museums and private collectors

Another focus is on museum educational activities that complement all exhibitions. The offers that are accompanied by educational professional technical personnel are oriented primarily to the target group of children. The works created by the children for the special exhibitions are presented in the museum rooms.
