The Havana is a erzüchtete man breed. It belongs to the Oriental Shorthair cats and is usually performed at the European cat clubs in this category. However, as the Foreign White at the Siam it has been long performed by many kennel clubs as a separate "race" and this is also in some American associations.

History

The Havana is known in Europe since the late 19th century. In the 11th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, it is also called Swiss Mountain Cat. From the 1920s, the breeding of the " blue-eyed Siamese no ", ie the OKHs, in the UK undesirable. Therefore, the Havana has not been bred. English breeders worked only in the 1950s, again about a "brown " cat (meaning here chocolate) to erzüchten. It is reported that a black house cat, a seal or chocolate Siamese and possibly a Russian Blue were used in this breeding program. Here for the first time the concept Havana Brown was used to describe the color genetics of the brown (chocolate) cat. Where does the term originated is controversial. He could be derived from both a bunny color as well as by the Cuban cigars.

The Havana Brown did not come until the mid-1950s in the U.S., but was accepted by the CFA in 1959 as a race. The champion status they received but not until 1964. Showing old pedigrees that American breeders also had Russian Blue and Siamese in their breeding programs at the beginning. 1974, this practice was stopped because no more outcrossing were allowed.

As the number of Havana breeders in the U.S. in the 1990s declined sharply, and so the gene pool threatened to become too small, 1998, the outcrossing was allowed with black or blue cats and OKHs with certain colors again.

Appearance

The first thing that strikes in Havana the glistening mahogany - shimmering coat. It is soft, shiny, fits snug and feels like a mink. An even warm chocolate brown which may also tend to reddish brown, is desirable. The head is slightly longer than it is wide. The cat has a visible stop between the eyes. Highlighted whiskerpads forms a somewhat rounded muzzle with a strong chin. Green eyes in conjunction with the rotated forward ears contribute to a watchful impression. Assuming a Havana high, so it is surprisingly difficult. The medium body must be strong and muscular, but convey a feeling of power even of elegance and grace. Hangovers are usually bigger than cats.

Nature

The Havana is a charming, playful cat with a soft voice. They often use their paws to make the passers-by attention to themselves or to investigate interesting things.
