Hawaii County, Hawaii
Hawaii County is a county located in the state of Hawaii of the United States of America. It is the southernmost island in the chain, the Big Iceland. The county has an area of 13,174 square kilometers and 148 677 inhabitants ( 2000 census ). The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hilo.
History
Hawaii was the home island of Kamehameha I, who brought 1795, the most Hawaiian Islands under his rule. He gave his kingdom the name of his home island, so now the entire island chain is referred to as Hawaii. James Cook, who made the Western world aware of this " Sandwich Islands ", was killed on this island. Administrative head of the county is currently Harry Kim.
Geography
Hawaii County has a total area of 13,174 square kilometers, among which are 2,742 square kilometers of water surfaces (essentially the coastline, which is counted by the U.S. Census Bureau). The largest city is Hilo, located on the windy side coast, making it one of the wettest cities in the world.
Administrative divisions
The Hawaii County is divided into nine districts. Basis are the six traditional moku ( districts ), three of which were of the most populous (Hilo, Kohala and Kona ) is divided into two districts, to reduce disparities in the comparable population figures.
