Hawke's Bay Region

Hawke 's Bay is a region in the North Island of New Zealand. Its capital is Napier.

Geography

The region is located on the east coast of the North Island. It bears the former name of a semicircular bay, which is the region of Hawke Bay. This extends from the Mahia Peninsula in the northeast to Cape Kidnappers in the southwest. The diameter is about 100 kilometers.

The north of the region is affected by the flood plains of the Wairoa River. Further south, in the central part of the region the landscape of hills is determined that rise higher and higher in the direction of the Volcanic Plateau to the west. This part is from north to south first and then go through the Kaweka range of the Ruahine Range, two medium mountain ranges. In the southernmost part of the area finally located the " twin city " Napier -Hastings extensive, fertile plains, the Heretaunga Plains.

Population

In the census in 2001 lived in the region 142 947 people. More than a third of that, namely 53 661 people, lived in Napier, the capital of Hawke's Bay. Hastings and Napier, which are almost next to each other, form the two largest economic centers of the region. Smaller towns are Wairoa, Havelock North, Tikokino, Waipawa, Waipukurau and Takapau.

The percentage of Māori in the total population is in Hawke 's Bay with 22 % in 2001 relatively high. One of the largest tribes who settled in the region, is of Ngati Kahungunu.

Economy

Away from the two major centers of the dominant economic sector is agriculture. This can be in Hawke's Bay to division into three parts:

  • Through it - New Zealand - quite continental climate with long hot summers and cold winters, the region offers excellent conditions for horticulture and viticulture. Both are operated mainly in the Heretaunga Plains. History

Between 1858 and 1876, Hawke's Bay was an autonomous province within New Zealand, after being separated from the Wellington Province.

In the course of municipal reform in 1989 Hawke 's Bay territories lost to the south by the Manawatu-Wanganui Region. Many people in the affected towns such as Dannevirke and Woodville still feel their former region connected.

  • The Māori gave an ordinary hill in southern Hawke 's Bay, not far from Waipukurau, a 85 -letter name: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu. This is the hill, which is usually abbreviated to Taumata, the longest place name in New Zealand and one of the longest in the world.
