Hazel Jenkins

Hazel Gertrude Jenkins ( born June 6, 1960 in Ceres, South Africa) is a South African politician and Premier of the Western Cape.

Life

Jenkins was born in Ceres and also grew up there. In 1981, she completed a teacher training at Belville Training College. Then she taught in Mitchell 's Plain near Cape Town. Already in her high school days she was active in politics and was a member of the Western Cape student organization. She was also active in the Anglican Church. In 1984 she moved to De Aar and married there. She has three children.

In 1995, she was ( part-time ) municipal councilor in Emthanjeni, the community is part of the De Aar. In the years 1999 and 2000 she was there mayor. From 2000 to 2003 she was a spokesperson for the Karoo district ( Pixley Ka Seme today ) and in 2003 she was mayor of the district. This position she held until 2009. Since 2001 she has been Deputy Chairman of SALGA, a government organization to support the councils at the municipal and district level. In 2007 she was elected to the national executive committee of the ANC after it had already taken on other management tasks for the party. In 2009 she was Premier of the Western Cape.
