Hazim al-Shaalan

Hazim al- Shaalan (Arabic حازم الشعلان Hazim al- Sha'lan; * 1947 in Diwaniyah, Iraq) is an Iraqi politician and served from June 2004 to May 2005, defense minister of the transitional government.

In 1972 his degree at the University of Baghdad in business and management. Subsequently he was head of the Iraqi real estate bank in Kut and Diwaniyah. From 1983 to 1985 he worked in Baghdad. 1985, under the government of Saddam Hussein, he had to leave Iraq for political reasons. In exile, he led a real estate company in the UK.

Because of embezzlement of more than one billion U.S. dollars an Iraqi court sentenced him in May 2007 in absentia to seven years in prison.

Hazim al- Shaalan is sheikh of the Ghazal tribe.
