History

The club was founded in 1937 as the first Ticino hockey club. In the 50s the team of the then village clubs first played in the National League A and won the 1962 Swiss Cup. Since 1985 she continuously plays in the NLA, partly thanks to the strong commitment of foreign players from Russian or North American leagues. In 1999, the team surprisingly won the IIHF Continental Cup. Never could Ambri -Piotta win the Swiss Championship and is considered as an eternal underdog.

Financial situation

Shortly after the successful season 1998/99 financial problems came to the club. A fundraiser among fans resulted in an amount of 2.5 million CHF - another 2 million francs were provided by prominent patrons - which ensured the survival of the team in the top division of the Swiss ice hockey. After the descent was only narrowly avoided in the season 2010/ 11, a renewed appeal for funds was launched. Fans and supporters gathered within a few months Sfr 2.7 million. In 2012, the Egyptian entrepreneur Samih Sawiris involved with CHF 1 million at the forthcoming capital increase.
