It was founded in 1981 by the nonprofit organization Project HOPE, which operates international health education. It is a peer -reviewed scientific journal with 10,000 American and international subscribers. It is one of the most-cited journals of their subject areas. According to ISI Web of Knowledge the impact factor was in 2012 at 4,641, which means that their magazine in the category of Health Care Sciences & Services in second place ( of 82 magazines ) to Milbank Quarterly.
