Hector Giacomelli

Hector Giacomelli ( born April 1, 1822 in Paris, † December 1, 1904 in Menton ) was a French artist, watercolorist and illustrator.

Life

The son of an Italian singing teacher was initially engraver and chaser and worked from 1844 to 1854 as a commercial art illustrator for gold work. For a while, he retired for health reasons in Paris and developed in the country a hobby for the animal and plant world. After returning to Paris, he was commissioned by Gustave Doré, to draw frames and ornaments for a planned by him illustrated edition of the Bible, which also Giacomelli gave a great success after its release in 1865. So he became a sought draftsman and turned entirely to the illustration of books on. His favorite area was the appearance of insects, birds and flowers.

Giacomelli was also a collector and published in 1862 Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre grave et de Raffet lithography, a catalog raisonné of his graphic work Auguste Raffet.

In 1878 he was inducted into the Legion of Honor.
