Heeg

Heeg ( Frisian Heech ) is a town in the municipality Wymbritseradeel ( Frisian Wymbritseradiel ) in the Dutch province of Friesland. The population is 2290 (as of 2009 ).

Location

Heeg is just 10 km south of Sneek on the north bank of the Heegermeers. The IJsselmeer is from here over the Heegermeer to reach the Johan - Friso channel and the gate of the village Stavoren or south over Woudsend, Sloten and Lemmer.

History

In addition to agriculture, a brisk trade developed in Heeg because of its central location and easy connections via the waterways with all the Frisian cities. Primarily eel was traded with Germany and abroad. Among other things, eel was exported to Antwerp and from 1731 to London. There were the so-called Palingaaken Frisian trade sailors over 200 years, a permanent mooring near the Billingsgate Fish Market. The specially built for this trade ships sailed the living goods ( 15,000 to 20,000 pounds ) as soon as possible of Stavoren to London.

Activities

Heeg is a known water sports center on Heegermeer / De rivers and has a number of boatyards, marinas and sailing schools.
