Heilbronn University is a University of Applied Sciences in Heilbronn with a focus on engineering, economics and computer science. With the Reinhold Würth University operates a campus in Künzelsau. Another campus in Schwäbisch Hall, which offers management and sales courses, opened in Autumn 2009.

History

The university was founded on 17 April 1961 as National Engineering Sciences Heilbronn, founding director was Friedrich Aßmus. The first courses were precision engineering and mechanical engineering, the latter divided into the trains operating technology and construction. Was taught first in rented premises in Heilbronn railway station district, the administration was housed in the former cigar factory in Heilbronn. Due to the rapid increase in the student population of 50 (1961 ) 260 (1963 ), the school was soon a shortage of space, in the spring of 1964, she was spread over four locations throughout Heilbronn. In the same year, the first 57 graduates completed their engineering degree. In the fall of 1965 took place after 2 ½ years of construction, the relocation of the Engineering School in a new building at the Max -Planck-Straße in the south of Heilbronn, which was provided for in the then Planning 750 students have space. With the Baden-Württemberg Polytechnics Act of October 1, 1971 the College Fachhochschule Heilbronn (later Fachhochschule Heilbronn - University of Technology and Economics ). With the conversion into a university were changing the entry requirements for the study. The required until then practical education through teaching or two-year internship accounted for, instead there were practical semester during the program. Prerequisite for the study was now the college entrance.

1972 was established as the first step to building a comprehensive university with the University of Heidelberg university degree Medical computer science. The comprehensive university with 10,000 student places, which would be built in Heilbronn after the university master plan II Baden- Württemberg, however, did not materialize.

From 1977 to 1989, Walter Dörr Rector of the University of Applied Sciences Heilbronn, the aim was an extension and new fields such as tourism, electronics and viticulture, which meant that the number of students of the former School of Engineering tripled during this period and the existence of the College of the future secured.
