Heinrich Mark

Mark Henry ( born October 1, 1911 in Krootuse ( now the town Kõlleste ), then Võru County; † August 2, 2004 in Stockholm) was an Estonian politician and exile from 1990 to 1992 head of state of the Republic of Estonia in exile.

Training

Mark Henry went to school and graduated in Võru then in Tartu from the teacher training college. From 1933-1938 he studied law at the University of Tartu. 1938-1940 he worked as a primary school teacher before he settled as a lawyer in Tartu and from 1941 in Tallinn. Briefly, he was secretary of the University of Tartu in 1940.

Politician

In 1940, after the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union, was a candidate Mark Henry at the elections to the State Assembly ( Riigivolikogu ) against the Communists, but was removed from the voters list.

Exiled politicians

1943 Mark Henry fled to Finland and was active in the organization of exile Estonians. He also served as deputy editor of the newspaper exilestnischen Malevlane. In 1944 he moved to Sweden. 1945-1956 Heinrich Mark was there Chairman of the Liaison Office of the Estonian Committee. 1954-1975 he was office manager and vice chairman of the Estonian Committee, whose chairman 1975-1982. 1951-1979 he was Secretary General of the Estonian National Council.

1953-1971 he worked as secretary of state (Head of the State Chancellery) of the government in exile, from 1971 to 1990 as deputy prime minister from 1971 to 1973 and as Minister of War. From 1 March 1990 to 6 October 1992, he was exiled Estonian Prime Minister with the duties of the President. After the restoration of Estonian independence and free elections, he handed the presidency to the first freely elected president after the Second World War, Lennart Meri.
