Helena of Denmark

Princess Helena of Denmark (* 1180, † November 22, 1233 in Lüneburg) was heiress of Garding and by marriage Duchess of Lüneburg. She is the ancestress of all subsequent Guelph.

Life

Helena was born as the youngest daughter of the Danish king Valdemar I the Great (1131-1182) and his wife Princess Sophia of Minsk ( 1141-1198 ). She was sister of the Danish king Knut VI. and Waldemar II and the French Queen Ingeborg.

In the summer of 1202 married Princess Helena and Duke William of Lüneburg ( 1184-1213 ) in Hamburg, so she was daughter of the Saxon Duke Henry the Lion and his English wife Princess Mathilde and bore the title of Duchess Helene of Lüneburg. The marriage went forth a son, who later became Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg, Otto I the Child ( 1204-1252 ). After the early death of her husband, Duke William, in 1213 her brother took over the Emperor Otto IV control of Lüneburg, before William's son Otto took this. The latter was used in 1223 by his uncle Henry the elder heir of Guelph Allodialbesitzes.

Duchess Helene was buried in the Benedictine monastery of St. Michaelis in Lüneburg.
