Helgafellssveit

The municipality is located in the west of Iceland Helgafellssveit in the region Vesturland on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

On 1 January 2009, the site had 60 inhabitants. The parish seat is Helgafell.

To the west of the township, on the way from Grundarfjörður Stykkishólmur, one crosses a vast lava field Berserkjahraun. In places, it is so warm that the snow in the winter are not stays there. The lava field has its name were slain by a saga that after two Berserk ( slaves ) here, one of which is fell in love with the daughter of his master.

The Way Stykkishólmur leads past the 73 m high mountain Helgafell. The legend says that one who has three wishes free for the first time ( in silence ) climbs this mountain.

Population Development

The decrease in population from 1981 to 2004 was 45%. Since 2005 is again observed an increase in population.
