Helsingør [ hɛlseŋø ː ʔʀ ] (Swedish Elsinore, as well as in German-speaking Hamlet spending ) is a city in Denmark with 46 474 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) and is located at the northeastern end of the island of Zealand ( Sjælland ) at the northern exit of the Øresund, against the Swedish city Helsingborg.

The city is part of the Helsingør municipality in the Capital Region. However, part of the urban area is in the field of Fredensborg municipality, so currently (as of 1 January 2013) live 68 inhabitants of Elsinore in this municipality.

Helsingør is known as the scene of the drama Hamlet by William Shakespeare.

Attractions

The megalithic grave of Nyrup is a Urdolmen that the Helsingørvej, ( Road No. 6 by Fredensborg to Elsinore ) is directly north.

Rail transport

Helsingør is the northeast corner of the railway network of the Danish State Railways. Here is a railway terminus with dense clock transport to Copenhagen and further across the Öresund link to Sweden. Previously there was a direct rail ferry to Helsingborg. On the edge along the center also runs the private railway to Gilleleje, similar runs a tram in the city.

Shipping

Helsingør Havn, the port of the city, with a freight turnover of around 4 million tonnes and its ferry port one of the most important ports in Denmark. Between Helsingør and Helsingborg operate car ferries of the shipping companies Scandlines and HH- Ferries, which bridge this section of the European route E4.
