Hendrik Laurenszoon Spiegel

Hendrik Laurenszoon mirror ( born March 11, 1549 Amsterdam, † January 4, 1612 in Alkmaar ) was a Dutch poet and humanist.

Life

Mirror was brought up as a Catholic in 1578 and raised an objection to the transfer of the city to Calvinism. He was influenced by the Dutch humanist Dirck Volkertszoon Coornhert. In his work " Nieuwe Jaerslieden " (1578-1608), he attacked the tyranny. His most important work is " Hertspiegel " ( 1614). In this long poem, he developed his philosophical views and religious beliefs. Another of his works is the unfinished " songs op't Vader ons ". Mirror was a member of the movement, which promoted the Dutch language, and published his opinion on the importance of this language in the dialogue on Dutch literature ( 1584).
