Hendrik Verschuring

Hendrik Verschuring (* 1627 in Gorinchem, Gorcum, † April 26, 1690 before Dordrecht ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

His father was an infantry officer. The weak constitution prevented, which was also Hendrik Verschuring soldier. At age 13, he became a pupil of the portrait painter Dirk ( Theodore ) Goverts and later of the landscape painter Jan Both, Utrecht. After six years of training, he went to Rome to study at the Academy on. He returned in 1653 back to Gorinchem 1662 he was elected mayor there.

Critics praised his landscapes, but as his strength were battle scenes, especially his depictions fighting cavalry. The War of 1672 - which also was Gorinchem battlefield - provided him with many examples.

Among his pupils was the painter Mattheus Wytmans.

Family

His son William (1657-1715) - pupil of his father and of Jan Verkolie - was first a painter, but was then working as a merchant.
