Henri Deloge

Henry Léon Émile Deloge, often Henri Deloge ( born November 21, 1874 in Saint- Mandé, † December 27, 1961 in Bourg- la -Reine ) was a French athlete and medal winner at the Olympic Games.

Deloge counted around the turn of the century to the 20th century the world's best middle distance runners and was able to compete at that time with the U.S. and UK top runners as one of the few athletes.

As a member of the Racing Club de France, the Olympics were in Paris in 1900 for Deloge a home game, because the athletics competitions were held on the club's sports grounds. One month before the start of these competitions he made with an outstanding performance attention. On June 10, 1900, he ran over 1000 meters, a time of 2:36,8 min, which meant the then fastest ever time run over this distance and was unofficially announced as a world record.

Deloge participated at the Olympic Games in Paris at the 800 - and the 1500 -meter run. About 800 meters he could come up with a victory in the flow, in which he defeated three U.S. runners qualify for the final, finished there, but only the fourth place.

The Heats over 1500 meters should be on July 15, a Sunday, held. Four U.S. athletes wanted to participate. Two of them, John Cregan and Alex Grant, any sport rejected on a Sunday for religious reasons and gave up a start. The organizers had basically no pity on the wishes of many U.S. athletes who wanted to deny any competition on a Sunday. They decided summarily, to waive the preliminary heats over 1500 meters because of the now smaller number of participants, and to organize the final run immediately. Deloge could take advantage of the unexpected opportunity, finishing ahead of the two other U.S. athletes, John Bray and David Hall, second place. The winner, Briton Charles Bennett, a new world record ran in this race, but also Deloge remained under the old record.

At the end of the athletics competitions in Paris a run over 5000 meters for teams was held on July 22. There were only two teams, the Athletics Association of the British Amateur Athletic Association (AAA ) and for France, a team of Racing Club de France, for Henry Deloge started. A team consisted of five athletes. It was held a run, which was attended by all ten runners. Deloge finished third in the race behind the two Britons Charles Bennett and John Rimmer Although the third place, the team standings after place numbers (1st place = 1 point; 2nd place = 2 points, etc.) but lost the French team, thanks to the bad placements of teammates Deloge.
