Henri Gervex

Henri Gervex ( born December 10, 1852 in Paris, † June 7, 1929 in Paris) was a French painter of realism.

Life and work

Gervex trained in painting under Eugène Fromentin, Alexandre Cabanel and Pierre Nicolas Brisset and debuted at the Salon of 1873 with a sleeping beauty after the bath, which in 1874 a satyr playing with a Bacchante ( Musée du château of the Dukes of Bourbon, Montlucon ) and 1875 Diana and Endymion followed.

In 1876, he entered with an inquest at the hospital the area of modern realism, on which he progressed more and more to naturalism.

Major works of this genre are the Communion in the Trinitékirche (1877 ) and Rolla after a poem by Alfred de Musset. This painting in the format of 173 × 220 cm, which was excluded from the World's Fair for his provocative nudity in 1878, is now in the Musée des beaux -arts de Bordeaux in Bordeaux.
