Henri Lammens

Henri Lammens (* 1862 in Ghent, Belgium, † 1937 in Beirut, Lebanon) was a Belgian Jesuit and Orientalist.

At the age of 15, he entered the Jesuit order in Beirut and thereafter remained forever in Lebanon. For eight years he studied the Arabic language, Latin and Greek. His first work was an Arabic dictionary ( 1889). He was editor of the laid in Beirut magazine al -Bashir, after many trips he was Orientalist at the School of Oriental Studies at the Université Saint -Joseph in 1907.

He has published a number of studies over the Umayyad and the pre-Islamic Arabia. He wrote many articles for the first edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam, as well as for various journals.

His contributions are considered very important among historians of Islam. It is generally accepted, ' that Lammens has provided a new basis with his study of Sira ' and his contributions on the history of Ummayyaden are not to be underestimated.

Lammens concluded that the result of the Saqifa meeting was a conspiracy immediately after the death of Mohammed, which emanated from Abu Bakr, Umar and Abu Ubaida in Saqifa of Banu Sa'ida. They agreed to take over the Caliphate and to distribute the power.

Lammens has created in his book La Syrie the term " Greater Syria " as the original boundary of the Patriarchate of Antioch. This term has been politicized by Antun Saada for his political program.
