Henri Nouwen

Henri Jozef Machiel Nouwen ( born January 24, 1932 in Nijkerk, † September 21, 1996 in Hilversum ) was a Dutch Roman Catholic priest, psychologist and spiritual writer.

Life

Nouwens father was a lawyer Laurent Nouwen, his mother called Mary Ramselaar. The school visit to The Hague and High School in 1950, followed by 1951, the study of theology and philosophy at the seminary in Rijsenburg in Utrecht. In 1957 he received there the priest.

From 1957 to 1964 Nouwen studied at the Catholic University of Nijmegen Radboud psychology, then from 1964 to 1966 at the Menninger Clinic, a pastoral psychological institute in Topeka (Kansas / USA).

From January 1966 to 1968 he was a guest lecturer in psychology at the University of Notre Dame ( Indiana). After his return to the Netherlands he worked at the Pastoral Institute in Amsterdam and his PhD from the University of Nijmegen Faculty of Theology. In Utrecht he taught 1968-1970 Pastoral psychology and spirituality. From 1971 to 1981 he conducted research and taught mainly at Yale University in New Haven ( Connecticut ) in the fields of mysticism, spirituality, practical ministry and pastoral psychology.

In 1974 he retired for seven months in the Trappist abbey near Genesee New York back. From the experience gained during this period, he reported in a book. 1978 Nouwen worked five months as a visiting lecturer at the North American College in Rome.

1981 Nouwen left Yale University to meet for half a year in Latin America living with the poor and to get in touch with Gustavo Gutiérrez, co-founder and namesake of liberation theology. In 1983 he accepted an appointment at Harvard University, first as "Lenz Lecturer", later as "Professor of Divinity " ( theology professor ) at the Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, MA.

In 1985, Nouwen the Thomas Merton Award for peace and social justice.

The Ark

New impressions gained Nouwen 1983 by visiting the formed in 1964, " Ark " by Canadian Jean Vanier, a community of people with and without disabilities in France. This experience led him in the summer of 1985 to leave the Harvard University and a year to live in the ark in Trosly - Breuil. Mid-1986, he visited the home of the late French mystic Marthe Robin in Châteauneuf -de- Galaure in the Drôme. The end of 1986 he found in the Ark Community " Daybreak " in Richmond Hill near Toronto, Canada, a permanent home, where he worked as a spiritual director.

Nouwen is an internationally respected writer of spiritual literature. In his more than 40 books, he knows how to combine multiple scientific knowledge with Christian spirituality. His books live, not least by the reflection of his own spiritual experiences and the lessons learned from existential decisions. Many of his works have been translated into several languages.
