Henri Thomas

Henri Thomas ( born December 7, 1912 in Angle Mont, Haute Vosges, † November 3, 1993 in Paris) was a French writer.

Life

Henri Thomas studied literature and philosophy at the Collège Saint- Dié and at the Lycée Henri IV in Paris, where one of his teachers was the philosopher Alain.

In 1938 he published his first poems in the magazine Mesures, 1940 Gallimard printed his first novel Le Seau a charbon and 1941 his first collection of poems. In 1942 he married actress Colette Gibert. During the German occupation he was in danger of being drafted as Lorraine from the Germans. After the war he was in 1945 an employee of Terre des Hommes. He then went for ten years until 1958 to London as a translator for the BBC. He spent two years in the U.S. lecturer at Brandeis University. In 1957, he married Jacqueline le Béguec. In 1960 he received the Prix Médicis Prix and the 1961 Prix Femina. From him 1978, the magazine was founded in obsidian, the Samuel Beckett published his first French texts. Thomas lived secluded from the Parisian scene on the island of Houat and on the Quiberon peninsula. He then spent in Paris last year. Thomas was a friend of André Gide, Jean Paulhan and Pierre Herbart.

Thomas published twenty novels, twelve collections of poetry and short stories, essays and diaries. In French literary world he was little rezipiert. A translation into German by Paul Celan, who was known to the author, was touted in the German book market more under the name of the translator as below that of the author.

Thomas translated from the German works of Ernst Jünger, Goethe, Adalbert Stifter, Heinrich von Kleist, Achim von Arnim, Clemens Brentano and Hofmannsthal, from English works of William Faulkner, Melville and William Shakespeare, from Russian works of Pushkin.
