Henrik Visnapuu

Henrik Visnapuu ( born December 21, 1889jul / January 2 1890greg in the parish helmets, .. † April 3, 1951 on Long Iceland, New York) was an Estonian poet, playwright and literary critic.

Life

Henrik Visnapuu first attended the local school in Reola ( now the town Ülenurme ) and the Ministerialkollegium in Sipe ( now the town Kambja ) and the Municipal School in Tartu. In 1907, he put the school in Narva professional exam for primary school teachers from and then worked at various schools as a teacher. In 1912 he moved to Tartu and taught at the local high school for girls and Estonian literature. At the same time he attended lectures at the University of Tartu in philosophy. In 1916 he received his high school diploma as an external and could enroll as a regular student at the University of Tartu in 1922 and for three semesters in Berlin.

Since 1917 Visnapuu also worked as a journalist at the newspaper Tallinna Teataja, after which he was until 1935 worked as a freelance journalist and author. From 1935 to 1944 he was a speaker at the Cultural Department of Information authority of the Estonian state.

With the approaching Soviet occupation of Estonia Henrik Visnapuu fled in 1944 to Germany and in 1949 to the USA.

Work

Henrik Visnapuu debuted with his poetry, 1908. He was in the 1920s and 1930s, one of the most important Estonian poets of his time. In addition to Marie Under, he was one of the most influential members of the literary group founded in 1917 Siuru who felt strongly linked to the symbolism. Henrik Visnapuus poems fall on mainly by their futuristic and expressionistic manner.
