Henry Akinwande

Henry Akinwande ( born October 12, 1965 in Lagos, Nigeria ) is a Nigerian- British heavyweight boxer.

Amateur

As an amateur Akinwande in 1988 and 1989 British heavyweight champion, in 1989 he won it in the final against Herbie Hide. In 1988, he took for Britain in the Olympic Games in Seoul, but lost in the first fight against the eventual silver medalist Arnold Vanderlyde.

Professional career

1989 Akinwande was professional. After 18 victories, he punched in Berlin against Axel Schulz for the European Championship. In the first fight of 1992, both parted draw, the rematch won Akinwande clear in 1993.

After two title defenses, including against Mario shooter, he moved to the U.S. and signed with Don King. There, he beat Tony Tucker in 1995 and won in 1996 against Jeremy Williams for the vacant WBO world title. He defended him against Alexander Solkin and the British Scott Welch.

Then he put down the title and challenged in 1997 WBC champion Lennox Lewis. In a memorable weak performance he was disqualified in the fifth round due to excessive clinching and no longer taken seriously in the U.S. since then.

In 2001, he suffered his second defeat by knockout in the tenth round against Oliver McCall. In 2003, he defeated Timo Hoffmann. Since 2005 he is the boxing stable by Wilfried Sauerland under contract. In November 2006, he lost to the Ukrainian Oleg Platov on points.
