Henry Brockholst Livingston

Henry Brock Holst Livingston ( born November 25, 1757 New York City; † March 18, 1823 in Washington DC) was an American jurist and fighter in the American Revolutionary War.

Life

Livingston was born the son of Susanna French and William Livingston. During the Revolutionary War he was a lieutenant colonel.

Livingston, who had studied at Princeton University, was appointed judge at the New York State Supreme Court, where he was responsible for the famous decision Pierson v. Post of 1805. Two years after this decision, President Thomas Jefferson appointed him to the Supreme Court, where he worked from 1806 to 1823. During this time, Livingston followed mostly the opinion of the Chairman John Marshall.
