Henry de Beaumont

Henry de Beaumont, 1st Baron Beaumont († May 10, 1340 ) was a nobleman of the house of Brienne and founder of the English line of his race.

Origin

Henry de Beaumont came from the old French noble family of the Count of Brienne. He was a younger son of Louis de Brienne and Agnes, daughter of Raoul, Vicomte de Beaumont, from the county of Maine in France. His father Louis de Brienne was in turn became the youngest son of John of Brienne, king of Jerusalem, and of Berengaria of Leon, the daughter of King Alfonso IX. Léon. Military and political career

Henry de Beaumont in 1302 accompanied his relative, King Edward I ( " registered consangenineus " in a document called Edward II ), in the Scottish War of Independence. Even Edward II knew his services obviously very much appreciated, for he gave him not only the lands in Lincolnshire, but also appointed him to the Lord Warden of Scotland south of the Forth and also knighted him. In 1309 he received a Writ of summons and was appointed so that in the royal council. Thus it was also the 1st Baron Beaumont ( barony by writ ). In the following years he was entrusted with a variety of offices and dignities. He was Castellan ( Warden and Constable ) of various castles, was several times in the period from 1312 to 1331 Ambassador to France and once in 1313 and ambassador to Pope Clement V. In 1323, there were between him and King Edward II significant differences. Therefore, he was imprisoned on the instructions of the king on June 5, 1323 for disobedience in the Privy Council. However, Lord Beaumont prevented his escape, the king was imprisoned at Berkeley Castle and soon after murdered.

Edward III. rewarded him for plenty: he gave him the castle Loughborough and appointed him in 1336 to the Constable of Scotland, after he had already raised him 1333/34 the Scottish Earl of Buchan. In addition, he was appointed Constable of the Army and in 1338 the legal adviser of Scotland in 1336.

Henry de Beaumont, 1st Baron Beaumont died on 10 May 1340. His son John de Beaumont succeeded him as 2nd Baron, but not as Earl of Buchan.
