Henry Drummond Wolff

Henry Drummond Charles Wolff GCB, GCMG, PC ( * 1830 in Malta, † October 11, 1908 ) was a British diplomat and politician of the Conservative Party.

Life

Wolff was the son of Georgiana Mary Walpole and Joseph Wolff. He studied in rugby and in Europe. In 1846 he joined the Foreign Service. In 1862 he was chargé d'affaires in Florence.

In 1869 he was secretary of the British High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands.

In 1878 he was commissioner in Eastern Roumelia.

From 1874 to 1880 Drummond Wolff sat for the constituency of Christchurch in the House of Commons. He lived in Boscombe Boscombe Spa and urbanized and played an active role in the public life of Bournemouth. Within the Conservative parliamentary party he belonged to the group of four of the Fourth Party. From 1880 to 1885 Drummond Wolff sat for the constituency of Portsmouth in the House of Commons. 1870 rowed the Bournemouth Rowing Club in a foursome.

The Ottoman Empire had suzerainty over Egypt, where Khedive prevailed. 1885 Wolff agreed with Abdulhamid II in Constantinople Opel that both the British government, as well as the Ottoman government each appoint a High Commissioner to carry out a reform of the army in Egypt. The Sultan Ahmed Muhtar Pasha appointed as his military adviser to Egypt. The agreement was based in the grounds of the Egyptian expedition. The interest of the British government was to gain through this military advisers influence and information. From 1885 to 1887 Wolff exercised the office which thus created the High Commissioner himself.

From 1888 to 1891 he was Envoy Extraordinary and Minister for plénipotentiaire in Tehran; then from 1892 to 1900 Envoy Extraordinary and Minister for plénipotentiaire in Madrid.

Wolff was involved in the founding of the Primrose League. In 1862 he became Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George ( KCMG ). In 1878 he became Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George ( GCMG ). In 1889 he became Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB ). In 1900 he persuaded William Knox D' Arcy in Persia for oil search. 1860 his daughter Adeline Georgina Isabella Kingscote in 1908, a writer who wrote under the name Lucas Cleeve, was born.
