Henry G. Stebbins

Henry George Stebbins ( born September 15, 1811 in Ridgefield, Connecticut; † December 9, 1881 in New York City ) was an American politician. He represented between 1863 and 1864 the New York State in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry George Stebbins was born nine months before the outbreak of the British - American War in Ridgefield and grew up there. He attended private schools and then moved to New York, where he pursued the banking business. One year after the outbreak of the Mexican - American War he enlisted in the Twelfth Infantry Regiment of the National Guard of New York and served as colonel until his retirement in 1855. He worked as a stockbroker and was 1851-1852, then 1858-1859 and most recently 1863-1864 president of the New York Stock Exchange.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1862 Stebbins was the first electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Edward H. Smith on March 4, 1863. However, he resigned on October 24, 1864 from this position. During his time as a congressman, he was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means. Stebbins was curator ( trustee ) of the American Museum of Natural History and president of the Atlantic and Great Western Railway, the Dramatic Fund Association, the Academy of Music and the Central Park Commission. He died on 9 December 1881, was buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
