Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk

Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk ( * July 12, 1628; † January 13, 1684 ) was an English nobleman. He was the second son of Henry Howard, Earl of Arundel 22, and Elizabeth Stuart. He followed his brother, Thomas, after his death in 1677 as the Duke of Norfolk. Previously, he had been raised to Baron Howard of Castle Rising and around 1672 the Earl of Norwich in the year 1669. In 1672 he reached the reinstatement of his family in the office of Earl Marshal of England, which she still holds today.

Around 1652 Henry married Anne Somerset, daughter of Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester and Elizabeth Dormer. In January 1678 he claimed his first seat in the House of Lords, but a law was in August of the same year adopted on the basis of the alleged Popish conspiracy, which forbade Catholics to sit in one of the English Parliament. He refused to renounce his faith, and was for three years in exile in Bruges. Here he built a house adjacent to a Franciscan convent, where he could practice his faith freely. Later, he gave much of his library, his property and buildings to the Royal Society.

The noble title created for him died out with his grandson in 1777. The title of the Duke of Norfolk and subordinate dignity and the Office of the Earl Marshal were transferred to the descendants of his brother Charles Howard of Greystoke.
