Henry Howell

Henry Evans Howell, Jr. ( born September 5, 1920 in Norfolk, Virginia; † July 7, 1997 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party and from 1971 to 1974 Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.

Life

After attending the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, he studied law at the University of Virginia, graduated with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ) and then worked as a lawyer. In 1960 he was elected as a candidate of the Democrats in the House of Representatives from Virginia, before a member of the Senate of Virginia in 1966 and this was a member until 1971.

Howell, a strong supporter of civil rights and representative of the interests of workers and consumers, for the first time applied in 1969 to the post of governor of Virginia. But in the runoff for the Democratic nomination, he defeated William C. Battle, who in turn lost the actual election to Republican A. Linwood Holton.
