Henry the Friendly

Henry the Sanftmüthige or friendly (* May 15, 1299; † February 3, 1327 in Bruck an der Mur ), Duke of Austria, was the son of King Albert I and his wife Elisabeth of Carinthia, Gorizia and Tyrol.

Life

In 1314 Henry married Countess Elisabeth of Virneburg. The marriage remained childless. On behalf of his brother, King Frederick counter, he moved in 1316 with 2000 cavalry and infantry even more to Rome to Pope John XXII. to come to the aid of the Bavaria Friedrich supported in dealing with Ludwig for the crown. But before he reached Rome, he was recalled by his brother.

At the Battle of Mühldorf from September 28, 1322 Henry was, like his brother Frederick and 1300 other members of the Austrian nobility and Salzburgian captured. Henry was kept for several years in the Bohemian castle Burglitz caught before he was released for a ransom of 3,000 ducats and the assignment of his rights in Znojmo, Castell, Laa and Weitra. Drawn by the hard and harsh prison conditions died Hermann 28 -year-old in Bruck an der Mur. His widow had him interred in Königsfelden monastery in the Habsburg crypt.
