Henry Torrens

Henry D' Oyley Torrens KCB KCMG ( born February 24, 1823 in Meerut, † December 1, 1889 in London) was a British officer.

Henry Torrens was born the son of Henry Whitelocke Torrens and Eliza Mary Roberts in Meerut in India. In 1849 he joined as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Welch Fusiliers in the conscripted to military service. Torrens ' career was a success, at the age of 41 years he was promoted to Colonel in 1864. During the Crimean War he took part in numerous skirmishes. For his services he was awarded the Legion of Honour. It was then used in India and was involved in the suppression of the Indian Uprising of 1857.

In 1869 he was promoted to Major-General. While its use as a commander in chief (General Officer Commanding ) in Cork District in Ireland in 1884 was promoted to Lieutenant - General. Between 1886 and 1888 was Torrens governor of the Cape Colony, then Governor and Commander in Chief ( Governor and Commander -in- Chief ) of Malta. Torrens was an avid golfers. He founded in 1886 the Royal Cape Golf Club and 1888 the still existing Royal Malta Golf Club.

Torrens died on 1 December 1889 in London. His tomb is located on the Brompton Cemetery in London.
