Henry Ward Beecher

Henry Ward Beecher (* June 24, 1813 in Litchfield, Connecticut; † March 8, 1887 in Brooklyn, NY) was American Congregational preacher.

Career

Henry Ward Beecher was born the eighth of thirteen children of Presbyterian theologian Lyman Beecher. One of his sisters was the writer Harriet Beecher Stowe. After graduating, he became a preacher in 1839 in Indianapolis, 1847, in Brooklyn. In his in his lifetime published as books sermons he advocated the equality of women and the emancipation of the slaves. In 1875 he was accused by his former friend Theodore Tilton of adultery with his wife Elizabeth Tilton and successfully defended by Austin Abbott.
