Henvic

Henvic ( Breton Henvig ) is a municipality with 1298 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Finistère department in Brittany in France.

History

The name of the place can be derived from two roots. In Celtic hen is the word for old. The second root is Latin vicus means village. This suggested that the settlement history Henvics dates back to the Gallo- Roman period. The first written mention of the name as Henguic (k ), however, dates only from the year 1440th In the same period one finds also the first time the current form Henvic. Since no archaeological findings exist from an earlier period, it is expected despite the name of it, that the church is a medieval foundation.
