Hepatomegaly

Hepatomegaly is the medical term for an abnormal enlargement of the liver (Greek hepar). He referred to himself not a disease but an examination findings, which must be interpreted in conjunction with other findings.

A hepatomegaly can have many different causes:

  • Inflammatory conditions: viral infections (such as hepatitis or mononucleosis ), alcoholic hepatitis,
  • Autoimmune diseases,
  • Congestion by heart failure (heart failure ),
  • Fatty liver ( steatosis ), for example, after many years of alcohol abuse, in the context of diabetes (diabetes mellitus), with overeating or other chronic liver damage,
  • Benign and malignant tumors,
  • Leukemias, since often associated with liver and spleen ( hepatosplenomegaly )
  • Parasites (eg Tripartite dog tapeworm, malaria )
  • Symptom of disease in gastroenterology
