The Hérault ( Occitan: Erau, from Latin: Arauris ) is a river in southern France, which has given the department of the same name his name. It rises in the southern Cevennes, in the massif of Mont Aigoual. Its source is located at the Col de Prat Peyrot, in the municipality of Valleraugue, at an altitude of about 1370 meters. It drains generally to the south and ends after 148 kilometers in Le Grau d' Agde and La Tamarissière two districts of Agde, in the Mediterranean Sea. The Hérault flows through on its way the departments of Gard and Herault.

Shipping

The Hérault is navigable from its mouth upstream, via the round lock at Agde, to the place Bessan with ships. In Agde the Canal du Midi crosses the river at the same level.
