Herbert Blumer

Herbert " Herb" George Blumer ( born March 7, 1900 in St. Louis, Missouri, † April 13, 1987 in Danville, California ) was an US- American football player, as well as a sociologist and student of George Herbert Mead. He was 46th president of the American Sociological Association.

Youth / football player

Herbert Blumer grew up as the son of a cabinet-maker in St. Louis. His mother was a housewife. From 1918 to 1922 he studied at the University of Missouri, where he played college football. After his studies he worked as a lecturer in Missouri.

In 1925 he received a doctorate at the University of Chicago. In the same year he signed a contract as a professional for the Chicago Cardinals. The Cardinals played in the National Football League ( NFL), the then American Professional Football Association said. Herb Blumer was used by the team at different positions, but he was mainly used as a guard time in the offense of the team and was responsible for protecting quarterback Paddy Driscoll. In the season 1925 Blumer scored two touchdowns and was champion with his team NFL. In 1929 he was elected to the All- Pro. After 59 games in the NFL ended Blumer 1933 his playing career.

Sociologist

Blumer took over after the illness leaving Meads whose main lecture and led its work on - 1925 in Chicago at the University of Chicago teaching, 1952 to Berkeley changing. He coined in 1937 the concept of symbolic interactionism and summarized the ideas Meads in the following three premises together:

Retirement and retirement

After his retirement in 1967 at the University of California, Berkeley, Herbert Blumer seemed even as Emeritus until 1986. His health deteriorated significantly from 1985 and he died on April 13, 1987 in Danville, California. He left behind his wife Marcia and two daughters.
