Herbert E. Gregory

Herbert Ernest Gregory ( * October 15, 1869 in Middleville, Michigan, † January 23, 1952 in Honolulu, Hawaii) was an American geologist, geographer and director of the museum.

Life and work

Gregory was the son of George and Jane Gregory, nee Bross. In 1896 he graduated as a Bachelor of Arts and in 1899 he earned his Ph.D. at Yale University. From 1896 to 1898 he worked as a biological assistant, from 1898 to 1901 as an instructor in physical geography and from 1901 to 1914 as an assistant professor in physical geography at Yale. From 1904 to 1936 he was professor of geology at Yale University. In 1936 he was appointed professor emeritus. In 1908, he married Edna Earle Hope. From 1909 to 1948 he was a geologist bem United States Geological Survey. In 1919 he took over from William Tufts Brigham as director of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, whom he paused to 1936. During his scientific work at the U.S. Geological Survey Gregory made ​​geological, geographical and hydrological investigations in southern Utah and northern Arizona. In addition, he conducted intensive expeditions in Connecticut and Hawaii. In 1924 he participated in the fifth Tanager expedition to Nihoa and Necker Iceland.
