Heriot, New Zealand

P1

Heriot is a small settlement in West Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It is located 20 kilometers south-west of Raes Junction and 15 km north of Tapanui.

The place is probably not like many other places in the region such as Kelso and Roxburgh according to place of origin of the settlers in Scotland ( Heriot here in Scotland ), named. He was probably named after the maiden name of the wife of early settler William Pinkerton so.

The main economic activities are livestock farming and fruit growing.

The place was joined on 1 April 1884 an extension of the Tapanui Branch line with Kelso and thus with Waipahi and the Main South Line. After a flood in Kelso in 1978 the railway line was abandoned.
