Herman I, Margrave of Baden

Hermann I of Baden (* 1040, † April 25, 1074 in Cluny ) was Margrave of Verona from 1061 to 1074 and Count in the Breisgau and progenitor of the line of the Margrave of Baden.

Origin

Hermann was the eldest son of Berthold I of Zahringen and a brother of Duke Berthold II of Zahringen and Constance Bishop Gebhard III. of Zahringen.

Life

His title of Marquis of Verona goes back to the membership of the Mark to Verona then Zähringen ( titular ) Duchy of Carinthia, while the county rights im Breisgau family were. From his wife Judith, only her first name is known, classification into one of the southwest German noble families is not yet succeeded.

From the experience of the turmoil of civil war during the Investiture Controversy, which devastated the Swabian family seat of Zaehringen, Hermann I. 1073 moved into the monastery of Cluny laid back, from the religious vows and became a lay brother. He died there the following year. The Catholics commemorate the blessed Margrave Hermann I of Baden on 25 April.

For the same reasons, his younger brother Berthold II of Zahringen shifted from 1079 the focus of his reign on the Upper Rhine.

In the census of the Margrave of Baden Hermann has no atomic number, in the range of bearers of the name Hermann he is the first.

In the following period the name Hermann as the title of oldest son seems to have been used so that a possibly younger son took this name when the elder brother died as a carrier of that name.

His marriage to Judith went at least one son, Hermann ( II ) produced. This was the first who called himself margrave of Baden.
