Herman III, Margrave of Baden

Margrave Hermann III. of Baden, called the Great ( * 1105, † January 16, 1160 ) was Margrave of Verona and Baden.

Hermann III. was loyal to the Hohenstaufen and so came into conflict with his relatives, the Zähringerplatz Swabia. In 1140 he was involved in the siege of the castle Weibertreu and received the Reichsvogtei Selz in Alsace.

1151 was the Margraviate of Verona, which had been 976, the creation of the Duchy of Carinthia under the administration of the Carinthian dukes, by King Konrad III. to the Margrave Hermann III. awarded. From the year 1153 a deed of gift, in which the Hohenstaufen King Frederick I exist the court Besigheim the Margrave Hermann III. sold by Baden, this is the first documented mention of Besigheim.

In 1154 he fought in Lombardy and accompanied the emperor in the war against Milan. Hermann III. took part in the Second Crusade and was involved in the first campaigns of Italy Frederick I Barbarossa.

Marriages

Margrave Hermann married before 1134 the noblewoman Bertha, whose exact origin is unclear and is often attributed to the Swabians. Maybe he joined in 1141 after a second marriage with Maria of Bohemia, daughter of Duke Soběslav I.

Hermann III. was buried in the Augustinian Canons in Backnang.
